Derby Choral Union join us on the 159th anniversary of the Market Hall's official opening in 1866 for a special performance of popular choral pieces.

Derby Choral Union and Derby Market Hall

Derby Choral Union, Derby's oldest continuous voluntary choir, has a significant historical link to Derby Market Hall. The choir was formed in 1866, spurred by the success of a large-scale performance of Handel's "Messiah" at the Grand Opening of Market Hall on 29 May 1866.

Following the performance, local singers suggested forming a regular choral society and at the invitation of the then Mayor, Frederick Longdon, a meeting was held on 22 Jun 1866 and Derby Choral Union was formed.

Over 150 successful seasons later, and Derby Choral Union is still performing choral music in Derby and beyond.
